Mas'

2016, Durational performance, 30 mins

Mas' is a carnival, courtroom and church hall procession through which a band of Guardians of Memory walk, disregarding all notions of Time to witness and call attention to the places where their archives are held. In collaboration with 30 intergenerational Black artists, Anique J Jordan's Mas' procession calls into question the authority of 'history', official story and the Canadian archives by positioning Black bodies at its centre. Using the recent events of a massive archaeological dig (considered one of the largest urban digs in North America) which unearthed the foundation of a Toronto based historical Black church and the provincial plans to build a courthouse on top of its grounds, Mas' became an urgent, meditative response asking, what histories remain invisible?
